OurSTORI, LLC received a $6,000 grant from the Marlboro County Coordinating Council to continue to provide mentorship opportunities in a safe space. The target audience is adolescents and teenagers between the ages of 10-17.
OurSTORI, LLC serves as a health and wellness youth group in the Marlboro County area. STORI strives to help youth with self-discovery, establishing core values and personal interests, and recognizing learning potential.
To date funds have been utilized for operational costs as well as the following initiatives which promote the cognitive emotional development skills, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), career exploration, civic engagement, and academic support of our youth:
“Exploding Watermelon”, a STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activity. Items purchased included watermelons, rubber bands, snack, water, etc and other items used to facilitate the STEM activities. Mentees who participated utilized critical thinking skills and team-building skills to complete the activity.
“Posing”, STORI’s Summer Enrichment Program. Held each Saturday during the month of June. Items purchased included paper, folders, food, beverage, etc. to complete guided activities. Purpose of event was to build youth awareness, self-esteem, techniques on building fostering relationship and how to manage conflict. Mentees took home a folder containing activities and worksheets utilized.
“Juneteenth”, a Juneteenth Celebration. Item purchased included paints, painting utensils, door hanger, decor, food and drink to make the event a success. Mentee who participated engage in conversation surrounding the origin of the holiday, the advocacy which led to its formation and youth perspective on current Juneteenth related incidents. Mentees were able to take-home a celebratory Juneteenth Door Hanger.
“Foam Noodles”, a community engagement outing. Items purchased included pool noodles. Purpose of activity was to encourage health and wellness of youth during the Summer months. While, engaging in innovative activities that could be done with a pool noodle.
“Out”, a Pride month event. Items purchased included t-shirts, paint, iron on decals, decor and elastic bracelets, etc.. Mentees who participated engaged in meaningful conversation pertaining to the origin of Pride Month, the contributions of those who advocated for LGBTQIA+2 rights and their perception of issues as they view it today. Mentees further engaged in a DIY wearable art activity to display their creativity.
“STRIPES”, a July Fourth Celebration. Items purchased include tie-dye materials and supplies, food beverages, and take-home commemorative items , etc. to further celebrate the occasion on it’s arrival. STRIPES will be held at STORI on June 30th, 2022. Purpose of the event is to engage youth in a positive constructive activity while engaging in conversation surrounding the significance of the United States independence and sacrifices made.
“Write Track”, our back to school initiative entitled . Items purchased include wooden pencils, flexible pencils, pencil grips,easers, nuts n’ bolts fidgets, pencil sharpeners, and a clear pencil pouch. Items will be distributed at our facility and provided to 80 youth within our community.
